A DAY OF PRAYER

Resolution - Whereas, in 1776 the Continental Congress of the United States called upon the President to proclaim a Day of Prayer; and Whereas, our Founding Fathers believed that God governs in the affairs of people and based their Declaration of Independence upon a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence. It is appropriate for the Citizens of Los Angeles to join together in prayer; and Whereas, Los Angeles was founded by Father Junipero Serra, a man of prayer; and hosted the first Billy Graham Crusade in 1949; and is home to many national and international religious organizations as well as some of the largest congregations in America; the history of our City is held together by the strong thread of God's people seeking His blessings. We declare our dependence on God's favor on the City of the Angels; and Whereas, citizens of Los Angeles come from nearly every nation on earth. On our Day of Prayer we join together to petition Almighty God to show us His mercy and His love, to heal our hurts and to uphold our hope, that we might be mindful of His justice and thankful for His blessing: Now, therefore, be it resolved that by adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles, on behalf of its residents, do hereby declare March 3, 2007 as "A Day of Prayer" in Los Angeles and further call upon the Citizens of this great metropolis to gather together on that day to pray for unity in the hearts of all our Citizens and for peace on earth.
