Motion - The Board of Public Works is requesting permission to accept the gift to the City of a sculpture and to have it displayed in the public lobby of the Public Works building at 1149 South Broadway.
A private enterprise association, entitled REMEMBERED, is donating to the City a sculpture called the "Big Rick and Rene Memorial Monument" to be placed in the public lobby of the Public Works building at 1149 South Broadway. The estimated value of this gift is $77,700.
The sculpture commemorates the lives of two City employees of the Bureau of Street Services who on February 24, 2005, were violently and tragically taken from us and their families by a disturbed co-worker. These employees, Rene Flores and Ricardo "Big Rick" Garris (Bridge Crew 165) remain in the minds, hearts, and memories of all who knew them. Within days of this tragedy, fellow employees with the support of family members, began a mission to honor Rene and Big Rick.
The Cultural Affairs Commission has already indicated its approval of the monument's design and location.
THEREFORE MOVE that the City Council accept the gift to the City of a sculpture called the "Big Rick and Rene Memorial Monument," with an estimated value of $77,700, and authorize the Board of Public Works to: 1) thank the donors, 2) record the sculpture on the Department's appropriate inventory list, and 3) place it the public lobby of the Public Works building at 1149 South Broadway.
