Motion - Whereas, June 13, 2007 marks the 20th Annual ILWU-Propeller Club Sea Food Feast and is to be designated Labor Management Day; and
Whereas, the fish fry is a memorial scholarship event providing graduating harbor area high school seniors with scholarship money in memory of ILWU workers killed working on the waterfront; and
Whereas, the event has become a popular community and industry event and has raised
approximately $200,000 in scholarship monies and provided hundreds of students with an
opportunity to seek higher levels of learning and a better understanding of the world in which they live; and
Whereas, the success of the ILWU/Propeller Club Sea Food Feast is due to the hard work and dedication of numerous individuals and corporations; large and small and the Port of Los Angeles who proudly provides the event with monetary logistics and staff support; and
Whereas, the ILWU/Propeller Club Sea Food Feast has also become known as Labor Management Day. The event has fostered a greater understanding and respect for the individual roles stakeholders play in the goods movement industry; and
Whereas, the Sea Food Feast is about serving our youth, remembering those we have lost and working together to solve common problems for the betterment of the maritime industry:
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that by adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council does hereby declare June 13, 2007 as Labor Management Day in recognition of the ILWU-Propeller Club Sea Food Feast 20th year celebration and extends best wishes for its continued success to providing youth with scholarships to further their education.
