AB 516 (CEDILLO)

Resolution - WHEREAS, any official position of the City of Los Angeles with respect to legislation, rules, regulations or policies proposed to or pending before a local, state, or federal governmental body or agency must have first been adopted in the form of a Resolution by the City Council with the concurrence of the Mayor; and WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the rich historic legacy of the many neighborhoods and communities in the City of Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, the southwest downtown area of the City, known as Pico-Union, represents a diverse and historic district and has been a major contributor to the preservation of cultural understanding and community heritage; and WHEREAS, this neighborhood was a fledgling suburb of downtown Los Angeles in the early days of the twentieth century and was a destination for new immigrants from many parts of the world, who created unique cultural community by joining Hellenic ideals and Latin American traditions; and WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles, through the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative, has officially designated this area as the Byzantine-Latino Quarter; and WHEREAS, there is a need to designate the Byzantine-Latino Quarter as an officially recognized historic area through the placement of highway signs and other appropriate markers; and WHEREAS, AB 516 would direct the California Department of Transportation to erect highway signs and other appropriate markers to designate the Byzantine-Latino Quarter within the City of Los Angeles as an officially recognized historic area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this Resolution, with the concurrence of the Mayor, the City of Los Angeles hereby includes in its 2001-2002 State Legislative Program SUPPORT of AB 516 (Cedillo) that would declare the Byzantine-Latino Quarter in the City of Los Angeles an historic area through highway signs.
