Title
REPAIR AND RESTORE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
Subject
Motion - The Hollywood Walk of fame was founded in 1960. It has over 2,100 stars celebrating all those who have contributed to making Hollywood the internationally famous center of the entertainment industry. It is a major attraction in the City of Los Angeles with over 1 million visitors each year. The Hollywood Historic Trust was formed in 1992 to administrate the Walk. Through its efforts the existing stars are maintained and new stars are added to the walk each year. This non-profit organization composed of chamber of commerce members, industry leaders, and civic-mined residents collects donations to install stars and repair the existing stars. In recent years considerable construction has occurred in, around and on the Walk. This construction has taken its toll on the walk to the extent that once stable areas of the sidewalk are now experiencing repeated failures of the black terrazzo as well as the damage to the pink stars. The Bureau of Engineering under direction from the Board of Public Works and the City Council has provided valuable assistance in evaluating the condition and methods of construction used on the walk of fame and assisted the Historic Trust in maintaining the Walk of Fame. THEREFORE MOVE, that the Bureau of Engineering be directed to report to the Public Works Committee regarding engineering assistance in the form of technical knowledge and experience to the Historic Trust regarding those areas experiencing repeated failures. That these areas may be examined, evaluated and tested by the Historic Trust to make recommendations for modifications that will preserve the integrity of the stars and the surrounding sidewalk terrazzo. FURTHER MOVE, that the Bureau of Engineering and Contract Administration be also directed to report to the Public Works Committee relative to waiving any fees for permits involved in the study and repair of these problem areas. It is understood that the Historic Trust will bear any other expenses related to the study and construction of the repairs necessary to the Walk.
