Motion - The late Johnnie Cochran was not only a world famous lawyer but a great community leader who served Los Angeles in many capacities. As such he was, and continues to be, a great role model for all children and youth. In recognition of his achievements and contributions, it is appropriate that the City rename a portion of the street terminating at the newly renamed Johnnie Cochran Middle School as "Johnnie Cochran Drive."
THEREFORE MOVE that, pursuant to Administrative Code Section 19.1 et seq. the City Engineer be instructed to perform the necessary steps to change the name of a portion of 17th Street, from Bronson Avenue easterly to its terminus just east of Norton Avenue, to "Johnnie Cochran Drive."

5-9-07 - Council Action - Verbal Motion - Wesson, Jr. Mover 2007 / Rosendahl - ADOPTED - HEREBY MOVE that Council ADOPT the following recommendations of the City Engineer (Item No. 31, CF 06-0287) relative to changing the name of 17th Street from Bronson Avenue to its terminus easterly of Norton Avenue to Johnnie Cochran Vista, SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE MAYOR:
1. FIND that the name change and establishment in connection with changing the name of 17th Street from Bronson Avenue to its terminus easterly of Norton Avenue to Johnnie Cochran Vista is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970, pursuant to Article III, Class 5 of the City's Environmental Guidelines.
2. AUTHORIZE changing the name of the portion of 17th Street from Bronson Avenue to its terminus easterly of Norton Avenue, shown colored red on Exhibit A of the June 9, 2006 City Engineer report and attached to the Council file, and further AUTHORIZE said location to be established at Johnnie Cochran Vista.
3. PRESENT and ADOPT the accompanying ORDINANCE changing the name of the portion of 17th Street from Bronson Avenue to its terminus easterly of Norton Avenue and establishing the same as Johnnie Cochran Vista.
4. INSTRUCT the City Clerk to transmit the following:
a. A copy of the Ordinance upon publication to the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles pursuant to Section 34092 of the Government Code.
b. A copy of the City Council's action on this matter to the Department of Transportation, Citywide Investigation Section, 100 South Main Street.
Fiscal Impact Statement: The City Engineer reports that the General Fund will not be impacted since the Bureau of Engineering is absorbing the cost of processing this request in the approximately amount of $1,500 - (Public Works Committee waived consideration of the above matter) - Categorical Exemption APPROVED - Ordinance ADOPTED.
